Trying to Conceive: The Feelings We Don't Always Say Out Loud

✧ · ❀ · ✧

Trying to conceive can bring feelings that are difficult to put into words. Behind the hopeful conversations, there may also be sadness, frustration and a longing you don't always know how to share.

If any of the thoughts below feel familiar, this is a gentle reminder: having complicated feelings does not make you unkind or ungrateful. You can care deeply about other people and still find parts of your own journey painful.

When happiness for someone else feels bittersweet

“I'm happy for her… but I wish it were me.”

Someone else's good news can bring more than one emotion at once. You may feel genuine joy for them while also feeling the ache of your own wish. Those feelings can exist together; one does not cancel out the other.

The effort of looking okay

“I'm tired of pretending I'm okay every month.”

Sometimes the hardest part is finding the energy to explain how you feel. You don't have to put on a brave face for every conversation. It is okay to have a difficult day without turning it into a positive story.

When personal questions become too much

“I don't want another person asking me when I'm having a baby.”

Even a well-meant question can touch something tender. You are allowed to keep your journey private and decide which conversations you want to have.

A simple response might be: “That's something personal, and I'd rather not talk about it today.” You do not owe anyone a fuller explanation.

Holding hope when you feel afraid

“I'm scared to get my hopes up again.”

Wanting to hope and wanting to protect your heart can feel like a difficult balance. You don't have to choose one feeling or force yourself to feel optimistic. You can take this experience a day at a time.

Making room for a little distance

“Sometimes I need a break from pregnancy announcements.”

Taking a little distance does not mean you have stopped caring. Muting an account, stepping away from a conversation or declining an invitation may be ways to give yourself some breathing room.

You can choose what feels manageable today and make a different choice another day.

A gentle reminder for your TTC journey

You can love someone and still feel heartbroken about your own journey.

You can be grateful for what you have and still long for something more.

You can keep hoping and still feel exhausted.

None of these feelings make you a bad person.

You don't have to share everything to feel heard

If you want to talk, choose someone you feel safe with and let them know what would help: a listening ear, some company or simply a conversation about something else.

If these feelings become overwhelming or interfere with everyday life, consider speaking with a qualified mental health professional or your healthcare team.

Which of these feelings do you wish more people understood? You don't have to share your personal story. Your feelings matter, even when you keep them private.

A little gentleness. A little breathing room.
You deserve both.
